When to book a stay in Bordeaux for less

It is cheapest in winter. January is usually the bottom of the market, about 37 percent below the average, as tourist traffic eases. Prices climb in spring and summer, and the highest rates fall in April, about a quarter above the average. The arrival day matters too: midweek is the cheapest, and Saturday the most expensive. Bordeaux draws plenty of weekend and festival visitors, so for a peak-season trip it is worth booking about three months ahead. The nicest dates are late spring and early autumn, when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller than in high summer.

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The most properties and the most demand are in the centre and around the Gare Saint Jean station, from where the tram reaches the main sights. This is the most popular base among guests. The highest rates are held by Centre Ville, about a quarter above the city average, especially around Quinconces and the Triangle d Or by the Opera. It is cheaper across the river, in La Bastide, where prices can be about 38 percent below the average, and tram line A runs into the centre in a few minutes. Saint Michel, Sainte Croix and Victoire are more budget-friendly yet still central, with a lively, cosmopolitan feel.

• First time in Bordeaux. The centre is the easiest base, within a walk of Place de la Bourse, the water mirror and the Saint Catherine shopping street. From here most sights are on foot.
• For families. Around the largest park, Jardin Public, in the Saint Seurin and Quinconces areas. Plenty of apartments for the whole family, plus greenery and space for a walk.
• For couples. Boutique hotels in the heart of the city, some with a rooftop terrace and a view. In the evening it is close to the wine bars and restaurants of the Saint Pierre district.
• With breakfast. Many central hotels and guesthouses include breakfast in the rate, often with local pastries like the canelé. Handy before sightseeing or a vineyard trip.
• Business travel. Hotels by the Gare Saint Jean station and in the centre are close to the offices and the fast train. The tram reaches most addresses without a change.
• Near the airport. Bordeaux Mérignac airport is to the west of the city. Hotels around it suit an early flight, and the tram and bus run into the centre.

When Bordeaux is more expensive

It is more expensive from spring to the end of summer, when the weather suits sightseeing and vineyard trips. Prices rise most in April and at the height of the season, and around big events such as the summer wine festival, Bordeaux Fête le Vin, on the Garonne. For those dates it is worth booking ahead. The cheapest and quietest time is winter, January to March, when there are fewer tourists.
